It all started when Jo Nagai, a second-grader from Japan, noticed that the butterflies he raised and released kept flying back to him. That made him wonder: “Do butterflies still remember their lives when they were just caterpillars?”
To find an answer to his curious question, Jo decided to write a letter…
✉️ An Awesome Letter Across the World!
Jo wrote a 4-page letter from Japan to Dr. Martha Weiss, a legendary insect scientist in the United States, along with his years of observations. He asked for guidance from Dr. Weiss, who had spent years teaching the world about insect memory.
At first, Dr. Weiss was hesitant, but seeing Jo’s research and passion, she decided to mentor him.
And so, a groundbreaking experiment began in a tiny home setup…
🧪An Amazing Home-Lab Experiment!
With Dr. Weiss guiding him, Jo started his experiment:
* He exposed the caterpillars to the harmless scent of lavender oil.
* Whenever they smelled the lavender, he gave them a tiny, harmless tickle using a mini muscle-therapy device.
* Once the caterpillars transformed into butterflies, 80% of them avoided the lavender scent!
Even though their bodies completely changed, the butterflies never forgot what they learned as caterpillars! When Jo sent his 33-page report, Dr. Weiss was completely blown away.
But Jo wasn’t done yet—he wanted to take his research to the next level…
🧬 Passing Memories to the Next Generation!
Jo later proved that butterflies don’t just hold onto their own memories—they can actually pass them down to their babies! If scientists apply this idea to humans in the future, it points to a huge possibility: Could our ancestors’ fears and stress be passed down to us through our genes?
Thinking about how curiosity can defy age reminds us of this Bible verse…
📖Word of Scripture
“He will bless those who fear the Lord—small and great alike.” — Psalm 115:13🌟
💭 The Point?
Dr. Weiss recently traveled to Japan to meet the now 10-year-old Jo in person. When asked about his future, Jo said he wants to become the world’s first “insect vet”! Jo has proved that you don’t need to be an adult to do big, impactful things.
