Mariyappan Thangavelu is one of India’s most inspiring sports personalities. His life story teaches us that difficulties cannot stop a person who has courage and determination.
Mariyappan was born in a poor family in a small village in Tamil Nadu. His mother worked very hard selling vegetables to take care of the family. When Mariyappan was only five years old, a bus accidentally ran over his right leg. The injury caused a permanent disability, and many people thought his future would be limited.
But Mariyappan did not lose hope. During his school days, his teachers noticed that he was very talented in high jump. Even with his disability, he could jump higher than many others. His physical education teacher encouraged him to practice seriously and believe in himself.
Through hard work and strong determination, Mariyappan became a national athlete. His biggest achievement came at the 2016 Summer Paralympics where he won the gold medal in high jump for India. Later, he also won a silver medal at the 2020 Summer Paralympics.
Mariyappan is not only a champion in sports but also in kindness. After receiving prize money from the Tamil Nadu government, he donated part of it to schools and helped students in need.
His story reminds young people that success comes through hard work, self-confidence, and a willingness to help others.
