New Delhi: The Union Government has appointed new members to the National Commission for Minorities (NCM), strengthening the statutory body responsible for protecting the rights and welfare of minority communities in India.
Harjit Singh Grewal has assumed office as the Chairman of the Commission, while S. Munawari Begum has taken charge as the Vice-Chairperson. The newly appointed members are expected to help the Commission promote equal opportunities, protect minority rights, and strengthen inclusive governance.
The National Commission for Minorities works to safeguard the interests of notified minority communities, including Christians, Muslims, Sikhs, Buddhists, Parsis, and Jains. It reviews the implementation of constitutional safeguards, examines complaints related to minority rights, and advises the Central Government on matters affecting these communities.
The new appointments come at a time when issues related to religious freedom, education, social welfare, and minority development continue to receive national attention. Church leaders and minority organizations have expressed hope that the reconstituted Commission will work impartially and effectively in addressing the concerns of all minority communities.
The Commission also plays an important role in promoting communal harmony, encouraging dialogue, and ensuring that government welfare schemes reach minority communities without discrimination.
Officials said the new leadership will focus on strengthening the Commission’s outreach, improving coordination with state governments, and addressing grievances more efficiently. The appointments are expected to enhance the Commission’s role in protecting constitutional rights while promoting equality, justice, and peaceful coexistence among India’s diverse religious communities.
