THE FUTURE OF THE NATION RESTS ON TEACHERS

“The crowds were astounded at His teaching, for He taught them as one having authority and not as their scribes” (Mt 7:28).

Month of June opens the New Academic Year 2017-18 in many places. Students will be excited to come to school with new uniform and books. They are also ready to welcome the new teacher in their life. Teaching is one of the noblest professions. The nobility of the profession comes from the truth that it is meant to help people grow into knowledgeable, mature and finer human beings. It is a difficult profession because teachers have to deal with human beings. Human person is one of the most fragile of God’s creatures. It is also probably the most demanding because it deals with human life for itself. Every word and every gesture of a teacher either positively or negatively affects the student. An encouraging word from a teacher can heal the wounds of a student and elevate his/her spirits. The influence can accompany the students even to the grave. A negative remark on the other hand can affect the self image of a pupil of all of his/her life.

We believe that the future of a nation lies in the student. If that is true then the future of the students (nation) rests surely in the hands of teachers. The paths that the teachers show will be the path that the future generation will be trading on. So teachers have the responsibility towards the present and the generation to come.

The responsibility of teachers is not only to give the student what they have i.e knowledge but more importantly what they are. Students have a natural inclination towards imitating what their teachers are, rather than towards imbibing what they say. Hence, teachers should be skilful as well as role models to their students.

Jesus taught His students – disciples to live their life fully and meaningfully. The teacher is to serve, to be humble, to suffer and to lie to give life for many. The teacher teaches with power and authority, should be wise and experienced, authentic and credible where she/he should be stern and act with compassion.

“A single conversation across the table with a wise person is worth a month’s study of books.”
