Jesus told a story looking at someone who had great confidence in his own righteousness and scorned everyone else.
“Two men went to pray. One was a Pharisee and the other was a tax collector.
Pharisee stood and prayed “I thank you, that I am not a sinner like everyone else. For I don’t cheat, and I don’t commit adultery. I’m certainly not like that taxcollector! I fast twice a week, give you tenth of my income.
But the tax collector stood at a distance and dared not even lift his eyes to heaven as he prayed.
He beat his chest in sorrow, saying.
“Oh God, have mercy on me, for I am a sinner.”
Jesus said, “This humble tax collector,
not Pharisee, prayed with his heart.
The proud will be humbled and the humble will be exalted.”
