Reading [2 Corinthians 4:16–18]

READING : Therefore we do not lose heart. Though out-wardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal (2 Corinthians 4:16–18).

REFLECTION: St. Paul, writing from deep personal experience of suffering, reminds us that Christian life involves a paradox: suffering and renewal, weakness and strength, affliction and glory.

Despite physical weariness, aging, or persecution, Paul affirms that the inner self is being renewed daily. This is spiritual growth – the soul being strengthened by grace, prayer, and perseverance even as the body weakens.

Paul does not belittle suffering but places it in the perspective of eternity. When compared with the “eternal weight of glory,” earthly struggles are brief and light. It is not about denial of pain, but hope beyond it.

This is the heart of Christian faith: we live not by appearances, but by faith in eternal realities – God, grace, heaven. The unseen is more real than the passing world. Faith allows us to endure hardship without despair.

In short, St. Paul urges us to remain hopeful during trials, reminding us that pain is not permanent and God is at work within us even in the hardest times. He also invites us to shift our focus from earthly to eternal things. What we suffer here has meaning when united with Christ. Even if life outwardly seems broken or declining, God’s grace renews us interiorly when we stay close to Him in prayer and virtue. Fixing our eyes on the unseen is a daily choice – to walk by faith, not by sight, and to trust in what God has promised even when it is not yet visible.

PRAYER : Lord Jesus, in the midst of trials, when our strength seems to wither and our hearts grow weary, remind us of Your promise that our inner self is being renewed each day. Help us not to lose heart, even when we face suffering or discouragement. Teach us to see beyond the temporary struggles of this world. Let the eyes of our faith be fixed not on what is visible and fading, but on what is unseen and everlasting. Grant us the grace to believe that even our present pain has purpose – shaping us, purifying us, and preparing us for the eternal glory You have promised. May Your Spirit renew us daily with hope and courage, so that we may walk not by sight but by trust in You. Let our lives reflect the light of that glory which is to come – that unshakable, incomparable glory that far outweighs all our afflictions. We entrust our fragile selves to You, Lord, knowing that in You, nothing is wasted and all things are made new. Amen.

CONTEMPLATION: Sit quietly. Let your breath slow. Let your heart rest. “We do not lose heart.” Let these words enter you. What does your heart carry today? Where do you feel weary? Breathe there. Let God be with you there. Though our outer self is wasting away. Yes – bodies tire. Hopes dim. The world presses in. But the Spirit is not idle. There is a quiet work within you. Can you feel it? Not always – but it is there. “Our inner self is being renewed day by day.” Slowly. Tenderly. Faithfully. God is renewing you. You do not need to see the whole picture. You only need to be here – now – and trust. For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us. These days are not meaningless. Even pain can become a path. Not fleeting. Not shallow. But weighty, real, eternal. Can you imagine such a glory? Can you let your soul lean toward it? Rest now. Let silence speak. Let grace fall gently. Remain here a little while – with the unseen, with the eternal, with the One who renews.

ACTION : Sit in silence and breathe slowly. Offer any burdens you feel – naming them, and letting them go into God’s hands.
