As we celebrate the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary on September 8th, it is a fitting time to reflect on the qualities that make her such a revered figure in the Christian faith. Mary, the Mother of Jesus, is not only a central figure in the story of salvation but also a model of virtue and grace for all believers.

  1. Humility

One of the most prominent qualities of the Blessed Virgin Mary is her profound humility. When the Angel Gabriel announced that she would be the mother of the Son of God, Mary responded with the simple yet profound words, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word” (Luke 1:38). Despite the immense honor bestowed upon her, Mary never sought glory for herself. She always pointed towards God, acknowledging His greatness and her own lowliness.

  1. Faith

Mary’s faith is unparalleled. From the moment of the Annunciation to the Crucifixion of her Son, she remained steadfast in her trust in God’s plan. Even when faced with the most profound sorrows, Mary did not waver in her belief that God would fulfill His promises. Her faith is a powerful example for all of us, showing that even in times of uncertainty or suffering, we can trust in God’s providence.

  1. Obedience

Mary’s obedience to God’s will is evident throughout her life. Her fiat, “Let it be to me according to your word,” is a testament to her willingness to submit to God’s plan, no matter the cost. This obedience was not limited to the Annunciation; throughout her life, Mary consistently chose to follow God’s will, from her care of the young Jesus to her presence at the foot of the Cross. Her obedience is a model for us all, demonstrating that true freedom is found in aligning our will with God’s.

  1. Purity

Mary is often referred to as the “Most Pure” or “Immaculate” because of her sinless nature. The doctrine of the Immaculate Conception teaches that Mary was preserved from original sin from the moment of her conception. This purity of soul allowed her to be a fitting vessel for the Son of God. Mary’s purity is not just about her freedom from sin; it also reflects her single-hearted devotion to God. She lived her life entirely for Him, and her purity is a challenge for us to live with the same singular focus on God’s will.

  1. Compassion

As the Mother of Sorrows, Mary experienced deep suffering, especially at the Crucifixion of Jesus. Yet, her suffering did not make her bitter; rather, it deepened her compassion for others. She is often depicted with a heart pierced by swords, symbolizing the pain she endured. Mary’s compassion extends to all of humanity, and she is often invoked as an intercessor for those in need. Her maternal care and concern make her a source of comfort and solace for countless people.

  1. Prayerfulness

Mary’s life was marked by a deep and constant prayerfulness. The Gospels depict her pondering the mysteries of God in her heart, especially in the events surrounding Jesus’ birth and childhood. She was also present with the apostles in the upper room, praying with them as they awaited the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. Mary’s prayerful disposition is a reminder of the importance of staying connected with God through prayer, particularly in times of joy and sorrow.

  1. Motherly Love

Mary’s love for Jesus is the model of perfect maternal love. From His birth in Bethlehem to His death on Calvary, she was always by His side, offering support and love. This motherly love extends to all believers, as Jesus entrusted her to us when He said from the Cross, “Behold, your mother” (John 19:27). Mary’s motherly care is available to all who seek her intercession, and her love is a reflection of God’s love for us.

As we celebrate the birth of the Blessed Virgin Mary, let us strive to imitate these qualities in our own lives. Mary’s humility, faith, obedience, purity, compassion, prayerfulness, and motherly love are not just virtues to admire but virtues to emulate. May her example inspire us to live our lives more fully in the light of God’s grace.

Happy Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary!
