QUESTION: Could you please respond to Pope Francis’ view of homosexual unions?
ANSWER: The recent words of Pope Francis on homosexual unions have startled many while he signalled a message of understanding and compassion to the LGBT groups and their sympathizers. Perhaps, the most important question that concerns the Church and the world at large is whether Pope Francis has changed Church doctrine on homosexuality. My reading is that he has not changed the Church doctrine but has urged a climatic change within the Church to become pastorally more open to the plight of the homosexuals in different socio-political contexts. The Holy Father did affirm the right of the homosexuals to be in the family. They are not to be alienated or kicked out of their families. As the beloved children of God and our brothers and sisters, they are to be respected.
