Q: How did you celebrate Republic Day in the context of the Citizenship Amendment Act? Did you read the preamble of the constitution in Calcutta and Goa? Do you think that the controversial bill is a matter that concerns the Muslims only?
A: The Republic day really went on well. Reading the preamble of the constitution alone is not enough, we have to practice it all the way, with due respect for all, with an inclusive approach towards all communities, with deep respect for all Indian citizens and all human beings. We don’t know what the real agenda of the government is. In fact, nobody knows. Things are moving relentlessly in the direction of discrimination and polarization. This is not good for the country. The Indian economy is going through a difficult time. These things are just not needed for us now. I wouldn’t see it is an anti-Muslim Act. I see it as part of a larger agenda. In these trying times, we have to work towards integration. We need more peace, order and harmony so that people can be at peace. Farmers are in distress and the youth are a little agitated. With emotional blending of all citizens, we can together lift up this country and work for the progress of all our people.
