QUESTION: What is compelling the BJP to pass anti-conversion bills everywhere but actual number of Christians are decreasing? Is part of a broad program for the “saffronization” of India, meaning an attempt to impose Hindu values and identity?
ANSWER: Amid opposition pro-test and walkout, Karnataka Legislative Assembly passed the “anti-conversion bill”, seeking to re-place the ordinance that was in place to give effect to the bill. The Legislative Assembly earlier passed the ‘Karnataka Protection of Right to Freedom of Religion Bill’ in December last. The bill has sent fears into the system especially those of the minorities because the measures pro-posed in the bill are very stringent. There were attacks on the Christian institutions and persons in the recent past and it has been very painful to minorities. The rumour is that there were pressures from the higher ups to pass the bill; assembly elections are at the door-step and it might give a political advantage to the ruling front; appeases certain crowds who will use it as a weapon to marginalize the minorities. The process does not nourish the elegant values of tolerance, freedom of religion and above all secularism. Some look at this step in view of 2025 when RSS celebrates the centenary of its existence. The concept of Hindurastra is very much in the air; along with other changes fore-seen, which are openly discussed in the media. The state government gives an impression that this bill is not only aimed at Christians but all denominations.
