READING: When the members of the Sanhedrin heard this, they were furious and gnashed their teeth at him. But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit, looked up to heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God. “Look,” he said, “I see heaven open and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.” At this they covered their ears and, yelling at the top of their voices, they all rushed at him, dragged him out of the city and began to stone him. Meanwhile, the witnesses laid their coats at the feet of a young man named Saul. While they were stoning him, Stephen prayed, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.” Then he fell on his knees and cried out, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them.” When he had said this, he fell asleep.
REFLECTION: Acts 7:54-60 captures the intense and tragic moment of saint Stephen’s martyrdom. Saint Stephen, the first deacon, embodies a profound reflection of Jesus Christ. It is a touching scene depicting Stephen, filled with the Holy Spirit, confronting the Jewish council, only to face their enraged response. As he boldly proclaims his vision of seeing Jesus at God’s right hand, the council reacts with fury, stoning him to death. What is striking is Stephen’s remarkable faith and serenity amid persecution, echoing Christ’s forgiveness even in the face of brutality. Similar to Jesus, in the midst of his suffering, Stephen commendably entrusted his spirit to God and even forgave his adversaries. His unwavering stance symbolically mirrors Christ’s suffering, serves as a powerful encouragement for early Christians to stand resolute in their faith, embracing trials and tribulations. Despite enduring immense suffering and rejection, Stephen remained steadfast in fortitude. His example becomes an invitation for us to emulate his firmness, perseverance, and courage. His profound connection with Jesus, almost like a shadow, extends an invitation for us to follow Christ closely. Saint Stephen beckons us to do the same, urging us to embody unwavering dedication and commitment to our faith journey.
