“In His anguish He prayed more earnestly, and His sweat became like great drops of blood falling down on the ground.” (Lk.22:44)
It is almost difficult for a new-born child to survive without its mother’s milk. Prayer to us Christians is more essential than mother’s milk to a child if we are to mature in the faith. Human being can’t live without the nourishment food provides. Prayer is the food for the human soul. Our whole body is dark without the sight of the eyes. Prayer is an eye that imparts light to our very being. The world can’t function effectively without electricity. Prayer is electricity that can empower the whole of humanity.
What is payer? Prayer is a dialogue taking place during a love encounter with one’s Creator. St. Teresa of Avila, a great mystic says, “Prayer is a loving conversation with God who, we know, loves us!” Prayer is just being in tune with the Lord. It is simply sharing our feeling who someone who cares for us. It is a deep, personal and close relationship between God and myself. Prayer is also considered to be an awareness of God’s presence everywhere and at all times, then our life becomes a continuous prayer experience.
Just as all human relationships thrive on communication, without communication there can be no prayer. This communication may be in the form of dialogue, gestures, facial expressions, etc. Different modes of communication with God result in different kinds of prayer.
Prayer has wrought marvelous things in the history of peoples. Prayer has saved humanity from calamities. Through prayer mountains of problems and crises can be resolved. Burton Wills said, “Prayer changes people and people change things.”
Prayer is power; consistent, constant and persistent prayer doesn’t allow a person to enter into temptation. “If the heart is not praying, then, no matter what the body posture be, the tongue is wasting its time!” Let this Lenten season may help everyone to be more close to God and have God experience in daily life by keeping away ourselves from sin and the temptations to it.
