Encountering God and World in Scriptures

Lectio Divina-114 : Sr. Dr. Bincy Thumpanathu CMC
Reading [Matthew 7:1-6]
READING Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? How can you say to your brother, let me take the speck out of your eye, when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye. Do not give dogs what is sacred; do not throw your pearls to pigs. If you do, they may trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you to pieces (Matthew 7:1-6).
REFLECTION: This biblical passage encourages humility, self-reflection, and caution in our judgments of others. It warns against a hypocritical attitude and emphasizes the importance of addressing one’s own shortcomings before trying to help others. The Lenten season, a period of reflection and spiritual preparation leading up to Easter, is not merely a time for ritualistic practices but a profound opportunity for a transformative journey within. In the Christian spirit, finding fault in others contradicts the essence of fraternity; it disrupts the foundation of genuine love and patience that should characterize our interactions.
Central to the Lenten ethos is the admonition against judgment and condemnation. The teachings of Christ encourage us to practice humility and to avoid hasty judgments. This call to avid judgments extends beyond mere restraint; it invites us to cultivate a spirit of compassion and mercy in our daily lives. Self-examination stands at the core of this transformative period. Lent is an invitation to scrutinize ourselves with humility, acknowledging our faults and imperfections. Through this process of self-examination, we embark on a journey to purify our lives, to rid ourselves of the proverbial planks in our own eyes before attempting to address the specks in others’.
Humble self-reflection is not a solitary endeavor; it paves the way for improved relationships. The Lenten season teaches us that humility is the cornerstone of meaningful connections. Rather than merely adhering to spiritual exercises or prayers, the focus shifts to enhancing and rejuvenating relationships. The spirit of Lent, therefore, goes beyond a checklist of religious obligations; it is a holistic commitment to live with compassion and mercy. As we navigate this sacred season, let us consciously strive to dominate our lives with mercy, understanding, and love. In doing so, we not only fulfill the true spirit of Lent but contribute to a world enriched by authentic and rejuvenated relationships.
CONTEMPLATION: Find yourself enveloped by the presence of the Lord. It is a profound quietude that transcends the temporal noise of the world, inviting us to experience His divine closeness. As we bow our head in reverence, a gentle whisper resonates in the depths of our soul – a whisper that speaks not of judgment but of boundless love.
Let the tranquility of this moment wash over like a soothing balm. In the serenity of His presence, reminded of the teachings of Christ, who walked this earthly realm with compassion and humility. His words, like a timeless melody, echo in the sacred silence, urging us to embrace the purity of heart that shuns judgment and condemns not. In this full contemplation, feel the warmth of divine love encircle inviting us to shed the burdens of condemnation and criticism. May this profound stillness be a sanctuary where judgment withers away, and the seeds of love and understanding take root, flourishing in the fertile soil of divine presence.
PRAYER: Lord, help us to embrace the spirit of non-judgment and compassion in our hearts. May we recognize our own shortcomings and extend the grace that you have abundantly bestowed upon us to those around us. Teach us to see others through your eyes, with love and understanding, rather than passing hasty judgments. Grant us the humility to acknowledge that we are all imperfect, and only through your mercy and grace can we find redemption. May our actions and words reflect the love that you have shown us, and may we be instruments of peace and reconciliation in a world quick to judge.
ACTION : Relinquish the gavel of condemnation, allowing it to fall silent. Instead, choose the path of compassion in every interaction.
