Encountering God and World in Scriptures [Lectio Divina-120]

  • Reading [Ex 3:1-7]
READING:  When the people saw that Moses was so long in coming down from the mountain, they gathered around Aaron and said, come, make us gods who will go before us. As for this fellow Moses who brought us up out of Egypt, we don’t know what has happened to him. Aaron answered them, take off the gold earrings that your wives, your sons and your daughters are wearing, and bring them to me. So all the people took off their earrings and brought them to Aaron. He took what they handed him and made it into an idol cast in the shape of a calf, fashioning it with a tool. Then they said, these are your gods, Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt. When Aaron saw this, he built an altar in front of the calf and announced, tomorrow there will be a festival to the Lord. So the next day the people rose early and sacrificed burnt offerings and presented fellowship offerings. Afterward they sat down to eat and drink and got up to indulge in revelry. Then the Lord said to Moses, go down, because your people, whom you brought up out of Egypt, have become corrupt. They have been quick to turn away from what I commanded and have made themselves an idol cast in the shape of a calf (Ex 3:1-7).
REFLECTION:  God’s unwavering love for His people endures despite their repeated infidelity. It is wise for us to introspect and question whether we distance ourselves from the Lord in pursuit of idols and worldly desires. The Israelites, for instance, created a golden calf and forgot God who had saved them is a poignant reminder of God’s disappointment when we forget the One who has made us, raised us, and accompanies us in our lives. The human heart is perpetually restless, never fully satisfied with God’s faithful love, and tends towards infidelity. This temptation is ever-present. The disappointment of God stems from the infidelity of His people, and we are among those people. It is crucial for us to recognize this tendency and take steps to avoid sliding towards idols, fantasies, worldliness, and infidelity. We must continually reflect on our dispositions and ensure we are not drifting away from God. It would be beneficial for us today to ponder on the disappointed Lord and ask ourselves, Lord, are you disappointed in me? While we may have let Him down in some way, it is essential to acknowledge and learn from our mistakes. By doing so, we can strengthen our relationship with God and avoid the pitfalls of infidelity.
PRAYER:  Heavenly Father, we acknowledge Your unwavering love for us despite our repeated infidelity.  Help us to recognize the temptation of restlessness and dissatisfaction with Your faithful love. Guide us to avoid the pitfalls of idols, fantasies, and worldliness that can lead us away from You. Remind us of the Israelites who forgot You, and guide us to stay faithful to Your love. Grant us the wisdom to reflect on our dispositions and take steps to strengthen our relationship with You. May we continually seek Your guidance and forgiveness, and may our hearts remain faithful to You. Amen.
CONTEMPLATION : Find a quiet, serene setting where you can be free from distractions. This could be a room, a garden, or any place where you feel at peace. Close your eyes gently. Let go of any thoughts or worries.
Imagine a wave of peace washing over you, bringing a deep sense of serenity. In your mind, recall the reflection: God’s unwavering love for His people endures despite their repeated infidelity. Contemplate God’s endless patience and love for you personally. Acknowledge the times you may have distanced yourself from Him in pursuit of worldly desires or idols. Visualize the story of the Israelites creating the golden calf and forgetting the God who saved them. Reflect on the disappointment God feels when His people forget Him, despite His constant presence and guidance in their lives. Ask yourself: Do I, like the Israelites, forget God and His endless love? Consider any idols or worldly distractions that may have taken priority in your life over God. Allow yourself to be open to any feelings or thoughts that arise, using them for self-examination and growth. Take a moment to thank God for His unwavering love and patience. Open your eyes, feeling refreshed, centred, and more connected to God’s love and your faith journey.
ACTION: * Make conscious efforts to stay faithful and avoid drifting towards idols and worldly desires.
