READING: You have searched me, Lord, and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways. Before a word is on my tongue you, Lord, know it completely. You hem me in behind and before, and you lay your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too lofty for me to attain. Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there. If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast. If I say, “surely the darkness will hide me and the light become night around me,” even the darkness will not be dark to you; the night will shine like the day, for darkness is as light to you. For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.
REFLECTION: Psalm 139 is a deeply reflective and profound piece of poetry that delves into themes of God’s omniscience, omnipresence, and the intimate relationship between God and humanity. The psalmist marvels at how intimately God was involved in creation, forming us intricately and wonderfully. God knows everything, every thought, action, and word. Amidst acknowledging God’s intimate knowledge, there is a sense of trust and reliance on God’s guidance and protection. The psalmist finds comfort in the assurance that God is with us in every circumstance. This unwavering presence is depicted vividly in the verse, if I ascend to heaven, you are there; if I make my bed in sheol, you are there” (139:8). It emphasizes the depth of God’s love and commitment to us. Whether we find ourselves in the heights of joy or the depths of despair, God’s presence is a constant companion. This recognition underscores the intimate nature of the relationship between the individual and the Divine, fostering a sense of security and trust in the enduring love that God extends throughout our lives.
PRAYER: Gracious and Loving God, you are the one who knows us intimately, who sees every facet of our being. From the depths of our hearts, we express gratitude for your unwavering presence in our lives. You have intricately woven us together, fearfully and wonderfully. Your craftsmanship is beyond our comprehension, and we stand in awe of your creative power. Thank you for forming us with purpose and love. As we journey through the varied landscapes of life, we find solace in the knowledge that your presence is our constant companion, offering comfort, guidance, and assurance. Lord, we open our hearts to you. Search us and know us completely. Illuminate any path of darkness within us, and lead us in the way everlasting. Grant us the courage to surrender our fears, doubts, and uncertainties into your loving hands. In moments of joy, may we give thanks for your blessings. In moments of challenge, may we find strength in your presence. May the understanding of your abiding love fill us with a deep sense of peace, Amen.
CONTEMPLATION: Find a quiet space where you can be alone with your thoughts and take a moment to center yourself. Close your eyes, breathe deeply, and let the cares of the day slip away. As you settle into a peaceful state, allow the words of Psalm 139 to guide your meditation. Picture yourself in the presence of the Almighty, the One who knows you completely. Envision the various landscapes of your life, highs and lows, moments of joy and moments of sorrow. Contemplate the reassuring truth that in every situation, God is present. Open your heart to God’s searching gaze. As you conclude your meditation, hold onto the assurance that God’s love is constant and unchanging. Whether in the stillness of meditation or the busyness of life, the One who knows you intimately remains with you. Carry this sense of peace and assurance into your day, trusting that you are fearfully and wonderfully made, held in the embrace of a loving Creator. Take a few more deep breaths, slowly open your eyes, and carry the contemplative spirit of Psalm 139 with you throughout your day.
