Encountering God and World in Scriptures

  • Reading [Luke 17:11-19]

READING : Now on his way to Jerusalem, Jesus traveled along the border between Samaria and Galilee. As he was going into a village, ten men who had leprosy met him. They stood at a distance and called out in a loud voice, “Jesus, Master, have pity on us!” When he saw them, he said, go, and show yourselves to the priests. And as they went, they were cleansed. One of them, when he saw he was healed, came back, praising God in a loud voice. He threw himself at Jesus’ feet and thanked him and he was a Samaritan. Jesus asked, were not all ten cleansed? Where are the other nine? Has no one returned to give praise to God except this foreigner? Then he said to him, rise and go; your faith has made you well.

REFLECTION : This passage indeed brings a lot of lessons before us. The lepers’ faith is evident in their obedience to Jesus’ command to go to the priests. They act on his word, even before seeing their healing. This teaches us about the nature of faith, trusting and acting on God’s word, even when the outcome is not immediately visible. The Samaritan leper’s return to thank Jesus highlights the importance of gratitude. Despite being healed, the other nine do not come back to express their thanks. Gratitude is not just a polite gesture; it is an acknowledgement of God’s grace and an essential aspect of our relationship with him. The fact that the grateful leper is a Samaritan, a member of a group despised by the Jews, emphasizes the inclusiveness of God’s mercy. Jesus’ ministry breaks down social and ethnic barriers, showing that God’s grace is available to all, regardless of their background. While all ten lepers are physically healed, Jesus’ words to the Samaritan ‘your faith has made you well’ suggest a deeper, more holistic healing. This ‘wellness’ encompasses not just physical health but spiritual wholeness, which comes through faith and gratitude.

Like the Samaritan leper, we should cultivate a habit of returning to God with thanks for the blessings we receive. Gratitude keeps us humble and reminds us of our dependence on God. Trusting in God’s promises and acting on his word, even when we do not see immediate results, is a mark of true faith. Our obedience is a demonstration of our trust in his goodness and power. We are called to embrace the inclusiveness of God’s love, reaching out to those who are marginalized or different from us. In doing so, we reflect the boundless nature of God’s grace. Physical healing is important, but spiritual wellness is paramount. Through faith in Jesus, we receive a deeper healing that transforms our hearts and minds, making us whole. This passage invites us to reflect on our own faith journey, the gratitude we express, and the ways we extend God’s grace to others. It challenges us to see beyond the surface and seek a more profound connection with God, one marked by faith, gratitude, and inclusivity.

PRAYER  : Dear Lord, we thank you for your boundless grace and mercy. Help us to always recognise and appreciate the blessings you bestow upon us. Strengthen our faith so that we may trust and obey your word, even when we cannot see the outcome. Teach us to be inclusive and loving towards all, breaking down barriers as you did. Grant us both physical and spiritual wholeness through your healing power. Amen.

CONTEMPLATION : Sit quietly and let your heart be still. In the silence, long for a deeper healing, one that goes beyond the surface and reaches the very core of your being. Imagine yourself among the ten lepers, standing at a distance, calling out to Jesus for mercy. Feel the weight of your burdens, your ailments, and your fears. Experience the healing touch of the Lord, His presence washing over you, bringing restoration and peace. Allow yourself to bask in the healing presence of God, feeling reformed and rejuvenated. Sense the renewal of your inner being, the infusion of divine love and grace. Let this encounter with Jesus transform you, making you whole in a way that transcends the physical. As you sit quietly in this contemplation, embrace the Lord’s blessing and touch. Know that his healing is not just a temporary relief but a deep, abiding restoration. Feel the newness of life within you, a life marked by faith, gratitude, and a profound sense of God’s unfailing love. In this sacred stillness, let the experience of God’s healing presence reform and rejuvenate you, drawing you into a deeper, more intimate relationship with Him.

ACTION : Cultivate a daily habit of gratitude. Remain mindful of God’s grace and more appreciative of His presence in our lives.
