Reading [Joel 2:12-13]
READING : “Even now,” declares the Lord. Return to me with all your heart, with fasting and weeping and mourning. Rend your heart and not your garments. Return to the Lord your God, for he is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love, and he relents from sending calamity (Joel 2:12-13)
REFLECTION : The Lenten season is a sacred invitation to return to the Lord with sincerity, humility, and total trust. Prophet Joel speaks not to individuals alone but to an entire community, calling everyone to wake up from spiritual apathy and respond to God’s longing for relationship. The call to “rend your heart and not your garments” is especially powerful. In ancient times, tearing one’s garments was a public display of sorrow. But God desires not mere outward rituals – He wants the depth of our hearts.
Lent is not only about impressing God with acts of penance but about realigning ourselves with His mercy and love. This passage reassures us that no matter how far we have strayed, God’s mercy is always greater. His heart remains open. “Even now,” He says – even after all our sins, all our forgetfulness, all our broken promises – still, He invites us to come home.
This message encourages us to practice interior conversion – not just observing Lent externally but experiencing a deep renewal of the heart. It is a time to break hardened habits, seek forgiveness, and embrace a life that reflects God’s compassion.
PRAYER : Gracious and compassionate God, You call out to us in love, inviting us to return – even now –with all our hearts. In this holy season of Lent, we come before You with humble spirits, with fasting, with tears, and with hope. Not in outward displays, but with hearts open to Your healing touch. Teach us, Lord, to rend our hearts, to break free from pride, from apathy, from sin. Help us let go of what is empty, and cling to what is eternal –Your mercy, Your truth, Your love. You are slow to anger and rich in kindness. You do not turn us away but run to meet us when we take a single step toward You. Create in us clean hearts, O God. Renew our spirits. Let this Holy week be a journey back to You –a homecoming to grace, a return to love. Amen.
CONTEMPLATION : In the quiet of this moment, I pause and listen for the whisper of Your voice, O Lord. You are not far – You are near, closer than the breath I breathe, waiting not with judgment, but with mercy. You say, “Return to Me with all your heart.” Not part of it, not pieces I am proud of, but the whole – even the cracked corners, the hidden wounds, the silent regrets. You ask me to rend my heart, to break it open, so that grace might flow in… and out. You do not delight in ashes alone, but in what they represent –the surrender, the softening, the turning back to You. In this stillness, I see how easily I stray, how often I cover pain with distraction, and numb sorrow with busyness. But You do not rush me. You simply wait – gracious, compassionate, slow to anger, abounding in steadfast love. So here I am, Lord, not with perfect prayers or polished words, but with a heart that longs to return. Let this be not a season of performance, but of presence. Not just of sacrifice, but of surrender. Not just of ritual, but of relationship. In the quiet of this moment, I come back to You. And You welcome me home.
ACTION : Set aside quiet time to reflect honestly on your life, choices, and areas where you have drifted from God. It is not just about listing sins; it is about letting go of burdens, allowing God to heal the inner wounds, and starting again with grace.
