The Clergy Hunt by Kerala Police: A Call for Accountability

Light of Truth

In a disturbing incident, the Kerala Police reportedly assaulted 21 priests who were asleep at the Ernakulam-Angamaly Archdiocese headquarters during the dead of night on 11th of January 2025. This shocking act has left the public seeking answers. Were these priests, who have dedicated their lives to serving God and His people, treated as criminals on the run? The police’s violent actions, carried out under the cover of darkness, demand scrutiny. On whose orders was this operation conducted? Who orchestrated this disturbing act? A comprehensive investigation is essential to uncover the truth and hold those responsible accountable.

Across India, attacks on Christian communities, churches, and institutions have been on the rise. During the recent Christmas season, such incidents escalated, fuelled by forces that undermine democratic values and constitutional principles while marginalizing minorities. Alarmingly, even in Kerala – a state governed by those who claim to oppose such forces – Christian priests were subjected to assault, humiliation, and mistreatment. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, who also serves as the state’s Home Minister, must clarify whether his government had prior knowledge of or involvement in this appalling act.

The priests were at the Archdiocese headquarters to advocate for dialogue on internal Church matters. This building is not just an administrative hub but their home – a symbol of their dedication to priesthood. It is also their official residence as documented in government records. Gathered in prayer, the priests were hoping for a peaceful resolution following discussions with Church authorities. Under these circumstances, the use of excessive force to remove them is both unwarranted and unjustifiable.

Even in situations of unrest, law enforcement agencies are expected to exercise proportionality in their actions. The primary role of the police is to protect citizens, not to oppress them. Kerala has witnessed instances where the police have maintained order with restraint, even in volatile scenarios. However, the attack on unarmed priests in the middle of the night represents a grave violation of justice, morality, and human decency.

Instances of police misconduct in Church-related disputes have surfaced before, with some officers reportedly acting disrespectfully toward clergy and elderly priests. Such actions reflect a troubling disregard for the principles of impartiality and decorum expected from law enforcement. On this particular night, reports suggest that an officer openly declared before the gathered faithful, “You must understand that this government is against you!” This alleged statement only adds to the severity of the situation, raising concerns about bias and misuse of authority.

The government must urgently address these allegations. Were the police acting under direct orders from the state? If so, what steps will the Home Department take to ensure accountability and justice? In a democracy that prides itself on being progressive and inclusive, weaponizing the police to escalate tensions rather than resolve them is unacceptable. The Church, the Christian community, and society at large will not forget this egregious act of violence. It is imperative to ensure that justice is served and that such incidents are never repeated.
