Becoming ‘I’

“We are not yet ‘I,’” wrote Novalis. “But we can and must become ‘I,’ we are the buds of becoming ‘I.’”

The poet is the only human being who corresponds to the norms, he alone has the full possibility of “becoming ‘I.’”

Why is this so? An epoch which longs for culture will find its centre only in the arts; the less culture there is and the more intensely it is missed, the stronger the desire for it.”
