QUESTION: What is your take on the custodial death of Fr Stan Swami? Do you think it is a blow dealt on the missionary activity of priests and nuns in northern India? How does the Church view priests entering into social activism? Do you think the present ruling party is concern-ed about the marginalized?
ANSWER: It is a tragedy of our present system that it does not recognize social justice. It is a national shame. Stan Swamy was shown no mercy or compassion during his long stay in custody. It is also to be seen as part of a new tendency developing in some areas of North India. Social activism rattles the present political actors. The reaction to it is dangerous and unpredictable. So, we have to be very prudent, taking care not to give an alibi for branding activists as anti-nationals. Every party has its interests to safeguard. Their common interests are vote and power. The Hindutva party is known for its high cast mentality. Fr Stan was serving the Adivasis and other marginalized people. If you become the voice of the voiceless, you will be crucified. And yet, the government comes out with beautiful slogans. This despite the Hindutva party that rules the country taking pride in its culture and values. Even the judicial system is blind to social justice.
