MUSINGS ON GREGORY OF NYSSA

Light of Truth

Fr Joseph Pallattil

Here we think of Gregory of Nyssa, a mediaeval figure, who is significantly known for his philosophical thoughts intertwined with theological quests. He was a person who followed a neo-platonic style. Here, we turn our focus to the concept of creation and the relative dimension of human beings in the contemporary context.

The creation of man in the image of God (Imago Dei)

Man is placed as the pinnacle of creation in the Scripture. This is our faith and believes to be so. In the work De opificio hominis, Gregory justifies the order God has followed in creation (Gen. 1:3-27), i.e. man was created in its conclusion. It is to be inferred that ‘man’ in Genesis was introduced all of a sudden to the created world. In other words, what he saw and experienced were first impressions in his life (tabula rasa). He was like an invitee/guest but invited. All around him was strange! This too calls our attention towards the relative dimension of human beings with the world.

Today, we are in a battle against a microorganism, which is not even visible to our naked eyes. This turns to be nightmare for some. Still there is no room for any overnight human extinction. As of now, we are almost let free (not as free as pre-lockdown). One may notice that the whole scenario has a different modus operandi. Education has gone online, work is from home, eateries promote door delivery, restricted traffic, religion relying on technology, interactions limited, agriculture sectors promoted etc. This leaves us, particularly the aged with embarrassment and reluctance to adjust with the new developments. This situation is same to the entire globe. But what really makes difference is the awareness of being sovereign of our existence. Still, society as a whole seamlessly has to be one and bonded.

There were rationalists, atheists, materialists, scientists and even common thinkers who either denied the existence of God or highlighted the meaninglessness of his glorious creation-humans, particularly when the pandemic was in its full swing. This may even question our very existence. On the flip side, there were defenders who reaffirmed the quality and distinctiveness of intellectually-moved world. But, in result they are mere outcome of obsessed mind. They even assured hope in these human endeavors especially in medical advancements.

Summing up we can say that the Lord wishes human beings to enjoy the colours of nature and the unpredictability/adventure offered to us in various ways. It provides us with confidence and strength to go ahead with our prospects. The virility and vitality are embedded in nature and creations. This outbreak is thought to be defeated in a long run and as Gregory notes “… God make man appear in this world, so that man may be the contemplator and guide of these marvels of the universe.” Humanity and society, as an extension of creation, shall live long. May the Creation be praised at all times!
